HELPING THE HEALING PROCESS

We advocate for access to holistic rehabilitative services to survivors of torture and war conflict.

ADVOCACY

We provide space for interactions and to share experiences in a culturally sensitive environment.

SPACE

We use structured group therapy, storytelling, and expressive arts therapies such as theater, music, and poetry to mitigate the effects of trauma and to create a relaxed and light-hearted atmosphere for survivors. We also offer one-on-one counselling and legal services.

APPROACHES

Are you a survivor or do you know a survivor who may need our services? Contact us

We establish a medical protocol for doctors to examine torture survivors and document their experience. This may be necessary, for instance, if requested by the survivors’ lawyer to support a refugee claim before the Immigration and Refugee Board.

There will be a mutual referral service for legal and social assistance services when required. For instance, a survivor, if requested, will be put in contact with a lawyer who is knowledgeable and experienced about the issues and problems faced by a survivor of torture. In turn, a lawyer who has a refugee client can refer him or her to ASTAWT for assistance.

REFER A SURVIVOR

We educate the public, legislators, and service professionals, and we publish research.

Welfare and social assistance workers are able to contact ASTAWT about clients whom they feel could benefit from the organization's services. ASTAWT advocates on the survivor's behalf when requested to do so by the survivor, especially with regard to immigration and other government agencies.
